Peyton Dothager

A Heart for Service

“This community has always been here for me. I want to make them proud and show that all the support they’ve given me has made a difference.”

Here in Vandalia, where generations of families have walked the same school hallways, Peyton Dothager stands out as a young woman driven by a deep sense of duty and purpose. As a senior at Vandalia High School, Peyton’s future is already taking shape, marked by her recent decision to enlist in the military—a path that reflects both her character and the values instilled in her by her family and community.

Growing up in Vandalia, Peyton has always been surrounded by the kind of support and encouragement that small towns are known for. Her father, a former Army serviceman, has been a significant influence in her life, even though Peyton was born after her father’s service ended. “I don’t know much about his time in the Army since he got out before I was born,” Peyton shares. “But knowing that he served our country and was willing to put his life on the line has always made me see him in a different light—someone who embodies hard work and sacrifice.”

These qualities of hard work and resilience have clearly been passed down. Peyton describes her father as a tough, hardworking man who loves to fix things and has always been there to help with everything from math homework to life’s bigger challenges. It’s clear that the values of perseverance and dedication are part of the Dothager family’s fabric—traits that Peyton is taking with her as she prepares for her own military journey.

Peyton’s decision to enlist wasn’t made lightly. It’s a choice that comes from a place of deep respect for service and a desire to contribute to something greater than herself. “I’ve always admired people who serve,” she says. “It’s about protecting our way of life and giving back to a country that gives us so much.” Her quiet determination reflects a maturity beyond her years, a sense of responsibility that resonates with the community she calls home.

But Peyton’s aspirations aren’t confined to the military. She’s also passionate about education, currently torn between becoming a third-grade teacher or pursuing a career as a radiology technician. Her time at Okaw Area Vocational Center, where she’s enrolled in the Foundations to Education program, has given her a glimpse into the world of teaching—a field where she believes she can make a real difference. “I’ve had some amazing teachers who helped shape me, and I want to be that kind of influence for others,” she explains. “It’s about giving back and helping kids find their way, just like I was helped.”

Her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Bogart, stands out as one of those pivotal figures in her life. “She made our classroom feel like a family, where everyone was cared for and encouraged to do their best,” Peyton recalls. It’s that same sense of community and belonging that she hopes to create for her future students, whether she ends up in a classroom or a different field.

Peyton’s dedication to service is also evident in her commitment to the military. She shares that the decision to enlist was influenced not only by her father’s legacy but also by a deep-seated belief in the importance of giving back. “The military is a way for me to protect our way of life and contribute to something bigger than myself,” she says. This commitment to service is something that resonates deeply within her, shaping her plans for the future and her approach to life.

Outside of her academic pursuits, Peyton is deeply involved in cheerleading—a passion that started with competitive tumbling at the age of two. Cheer has been more than just an activity for Peyton; it’s been a source of strength, community, and joy. “Cheerleading is like a family,” she says. “We’re all so close, and we support each other through everything. It’s a tight-knit group that has made my high school experience truly special.”

Peyton’s involvement in cheerleading has also taught her valuable lessons about teamwork and leadership. “In cheer, you learn that every role is important, and everyone has to work together to make things happen,” she shares. “That’s something I’ve carried with me into everything I do, whether it’s in school, in the community, or as I prepare for the military.”

As Peyton prepares to graduate and embark on her next chapter, her ties to Vandalia remain strong. She’s not just leaving home—she’s carrying the lessons, values, and connections she’s built here with her. “This community has always been here for me,” she says with a smile. “I want to make them proud and show that all the support they’ve given me has made a difference.”

The people of Vandalia can indeed be proud. Peyton Dothager exemplifies the best of what this community stands for: hard work, commitment to service, and a deep-rooted sense of family. Whether she’s in a classroom inspiring the next generation or serving her country, Peyton’s journey is one that will continue to reflect the values of the place she calls home. And as she moves forward, Vandalia will be there, cheering her on every step of the way.
